Born on April 5, 1942 in Annur village, Coimbatore district, Dr G.Bakthavathsalam completed his graduation and post-graduation from Madras Medical College. After his postgraduate training in Surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital, Chicago, the US, he returned to India to set up KG Hospital which has now attained international reputation. The hospital has so far treated over 4.5 million patients.
He has also founded KG Eye Hospital which has restored eyesight to more than 85,000 poor and visually impaired patients, free of cost.
KG Hospital has given highly subsidized and free medical treatment and surgeries to over 2 lakh people, including 7,500 heart surgeries for adults and 450 free heart surgeries for children, 10,000 free dialyses and 1,300 life-saving surgeries for the poor.
His professional ethics is such that he never turns away any patient for want of money and in deserving cases he is magnanimous enough to extend concessions. It is noteworthy that he has provided liberal monetary concessions to the tune of Rs 149 crores to thousands of patients for various medical treatments.
